The Tie That Bonds

Chapter 14

"Duo chicken out." Heero stated as Trowa sat next to him and leaned against his chest. "He didn't even bother asking Hilde about Mia."

"Why doesn't that surprised me?"

"Well, I talked to her. She has to work that night." Trowa looked up at his boyfriend. "I suggested that I cover for her in exchange."

"So much for a full night alone." The Latin informed as he tenderly kissed along Heero's neck.

"I'd be home by eleven. . .and I don't work the next day. . .so it wouldn't be a total lost." Their lips brushed together.

"Maybe this will make up for the circus problem."

"She's still whining about that?" Trowa nodded. "She has my temper, and your mouth, so where did she get the whining from."

"I'd say Duo. Don't forget that he practically lives here."

"You'd think he'd have the balls to kick Hilde out." The taller man quickly straddled his lover and their affection grew more passionate. Heero closed his eyes as the kisses trailed down his neck and chest. He relaxed against the arm of the couch as he felt the teasing lips through the denim of his jeans. All at once, the back door opened and Trowa pulled from the Japanese man.

"How did Duo get a spare key?" He asked and Heero wondered the same thing as the American stepped into the living room.

"Damn, you guys need a 'do not disturb' sign or something."

"What the hell are you doing?" Heero growled.

"I need a place to crash. Hilde is on the war path again."

"Why do you stay with her if you don't get along?" The braided man shrug.

"I like the sex."

"I wish I could say the same thing." Trowa added as he stood and headed for the bedroom.

"Someone's awful bitchy when they don't get fucked." Duo mocked and slumped into a chair.

"Can't say that I blame him." Heero assured and followed his lover.

"Hey Heero, when was the last time you nailed him?" Too tired to really deal with the ignorant question, he continued to the bedroom.

"I guess it's too much to ask for time alone." Heero stated as he leaned against the closed bedroom door. Trowa walked over to him, lightly slipped his arms around the other's waist, and tenderly kissed his partner's lips.

"We're alone now." Trowa whispered and deepen the kiss. The passion brewing between the two increased, and Heero scooped the taller man into his arms. Not breaking the connection, he laid his lover on the bed; all the while, their tongues playfully sparred.

In a matter of minutes, both men were completely naked, and kissing each other at a maddening pace. They slipped under the blankets; not wanting to chance being exposed like they had during a period when Amelia had a series of nightmares. Heero wasted no time in entering his boyfriend. His lips trailed down the thin neck as soft moans escaped the Latin's lips.

"Oh Heero." Trowa moaned softly into his ear. The thrusts were slow and not belabored. Their lips met again as the pace enhanced, causing the bed to slightly bump against the wall. "Harder." Trowa gasped as he pushed himself against the erection; all the while his own hard sex was teasingly rubbing against the hard abs. No sooner were the men starting to fully enjoy the intimate moment, than the bed room door slammed open.

"HHHEEEEEERRROOO!" Both jumped at the sudden intrusion and parted just as Mia jumped onto the bed next to the Japanese man, burying her face in his chest. The little girl clung tightly to the strong neck, all the while crying and trembling. Heero held the child in confusion. He glanced over to Trowa, but noticed that even Duo was standing in the doorway, staring at the kid in concern.

"Mia, what's wrong?" He lightly rubbed her back in hopes of calming her. "Mia, it's okay. I'm right here."

"What happened?" Duo wondered from his spot. Heero attempted to pull the child from him, and was surprised at how harshly he had to push. He tenderly wiped her tears.

"I had a bad dream." She cried, her small chest quickly heaving in fear. Heero looked up at the violet eyed man.

"Did you show her another scary movie?"

"No."

"I don't want to go to the circus anymore." Mia cried and hugged Heero again.

"Why not?" The Japanese man asked, noting that she was holding him tighter. . .so tight that he could barely breath.

"In my dream. . .we were at the circus. . .and there were bad men there. They wore black suits and they. . .they. . ." She clutched tighter to the bare flesh.

"Amelia, it's all right. It was just a dream." Trowa soothed as he moved closer and started to stroke her hair. She turned slightly to look into the deep green eyes. "Remember when we talked about bad dreams last month?"

"But these weren't monsters. . .these were bad people. People are real."

"What happened in the dream?" Duo asked out of curiosity as he sat on the edge of the bed.

"The bad men hurt Heero." She whispered. Trowa looked up at his lover in concern.

Silence finally returned to the bed room. Mia was too frighten to sleep alone, and so laid between Trowa and Heero. Before allowing her to do so, they had asked her to step out of the room with Duo for a moment. In that moment, they had reclaimed their pants. Presently, her small frame was pressed against Heero's chest. Before drifting to slumber, she slipped his arm around her. Though she had been asleep for a few minutes, both men were wide awake; neither of them could stop thinking about the dream. After calming the child, she had told them that the men in the dream had guns and had shot Heero while she was riding a pony.

"Do you think she can see the future?" Trowa asked softly, not wanting to wake her again.

"Don't you think that's a little far fetched?"

"But not entirely impossible. Even you have to admit that she's not your average child."

"Trowa, no one can see the future. It's probably a scene from some movie that Duo snuck and showed her. Nothing more. I'm surprised that you would even consider it a possibility." The Latin remained quite as he stared at the little girl. Now that he thought about it, he realized that Heero was probably right.

"Do you have to go to work?" Mia asked as she sat still while Heero brushed her hair. "Can you stay home today?"

"Mia, I have to go to work."

"But why?" She spun around to face him. "Don't you want to be with me?"

"Mia."

"Please stay home?" She pleaded, her big blue eyes misted over as she remembered her dream.

"No. Now turn around so I can finish." Reluctantly, she did as she was told.

"Don't you think you have been working hard? Maybe you need a day or two off."

"I don't need a day off. Why are you suddenly asking this?" She didn't respond as she bowed her head.

"I don't want the bad men to get you." Heero sat the brush on the table next to the bed and turned her to face him.

"There are no bad men. It was only a dream." She continued to stare at him, not fully believing what he was saying. "Have I ever lie to you before?"

"No."

"Then why would I lie now?"

"So I won't worry."

"That kid is just too intelligent." Duo commented from the hall.

"Wish we can say that about you." Heero snapped and stood to leave. Mia jumped to her feet and grasped Heero's hand in her own. "We aren't crossing a street, so we don't have to hold hands." He informed and was greeted by another sorrowful look. The last statement only enhanced the threat of tears.

"But I don't want you to go." The tears begin to slide from the young colbat eyes. Trowa looked up, a little confused as to why Mia was crying.

"Stop whining Mia." Heero snapped and the child grew silent.

"What's going on?" Trowa wondered as he looked from Heero to Mia and back again.

"She doesn't want me to go to work." Duo kneeled in front of Mia and wiped her tears.

"Hey, don't cry. Look, I'll be with Heero. I'll protect him."

"How can you protect him? Trowa says that you can't even take care of yourself." The violet eyes glared at the source of the comment. "Please stay home Heero."

"I'm not staying home. Weren't you talking about being a big girl before?"

"Yeah."

"Then start acting like it." That said, Mia ran back to her room. A few seconds later, the door could be heard slamming shut.

"Don't you think that was a little cruel?" Trowa wondered and studied his lover. Heero glared at the Latin. "Heero, you can't forget that she's only a five year old child. She's afraid something will happen to you."

"What am I suppose to do? Stay home with her, so that every time she cries, she'll think she can get her way."

"No, but you could have picked a better way." Trowa started to leave the kitchen.

"Are you going to go pamper her again?" Emeralds narrowed at the Japanese man.

"Don't condescend me. You told me from the start that you were afraid that you would mess her up the way you are. How can you not expect that to happen when you're repeating the mistakes?"

"The way you're raising her, she'll come out like Quatre."

"I'll be in the car." Duo stated as he stood and headed for the door, knowing all too well what hearing the name made Trowa feel. Neither men acknowledged his leave.

"You give in to her too much Trowa."

"Because I try to comfort her?"

"That's not comforting. You're treating her the way that Catherine use to treat you. . .and as I recall, you hated that."

"First off Heero, we're talking about a little girl; not a fifteen year old boy. She needs that kind of attention. Secondly, you know why I hated Catherine hovering over me. As far as me giving in to her, I wouldn't have to if you weren't such an asshole."

"I'm an asshole? Just because I don't bow down before a kid that you're concentrating on spoiling? You can't give her everything we didn't have Trowa. You're not capable of doing that."

"I never once said I could. . .but at least I attempt to prevent her from becoming a zombie. That's all I'm trying to get across. I don't care about the past, or the future; the things I can or can't buy for her. The one thing I want to give her, right now, more than anything is the love and stability that neither of us ever had the luxury of at her age." Tears welled in the green eyes as he stared into the unmoved colbat ones. "I've been with you for seven years Heero. . .and not once have you ever told me that you loved me. I understand that it's hard for you. I know what you went through. . .we're so close that it's a shame. . .but she doesn't understand that. I don't need to hear it because I know, but she doesn't. She needs to hear it every now and then as assurance.

"You're going to have to accept the fact that she's ours Heero. Until our last dying breath, she is ours. I know you push her away because you're scared. I was too, but you have to let go of that fear. If you don't she's the one that's going to suffer. She didn't ask for this, just as we didn't. All we can do is try to make the best of it. . .for our own sake and hers." Thoughtful silence befell the room.

Mia wiped her tears on her pillow as she listened to the stillness. Though she couldn't fully understand what every word just said meant, she understood the anger that was in both men's tone. She knew they were fighting over her. It was the first time she ever heard them, and it worried her. She wanted both Trowa and Heero to live with her. As she laid on her bed, she told herself that she would be good, and not cause any more fights between Heero and Trowa. Suddenly, there was a light tap on the door before it was opened and Heero stood in the doorway.

"Can I come in?" He asked softly and Mia nodded while she sat up straight. He entered the room and sat next to the little girl. "Amelia, I'm sorry that I snapped at you. It's not your fault." The little girl hugged her pillow tightly in her lap, afraid to look into Heero's face. He studied her features a moment before continuing. "Mia, look at me." She slightly lifted her eyes to meet his.

"Do you and Trowa hate each other now?"

"No. Why would you think that?"

"Because you were yelling at each other."

"We weren't yelling. . .we were just speaking in heated tones."

"I'm sorry I caused you to fight."

"You didn't cause it." He tenderly pushed her hair behind her ear. "If anyone caused it, it was me."

"How?"

"I have a lot of problems Amelia. Problems you wouldn't be able to even begin to understand. Trowa and I were fighting because of my problems, not you."

"Then why were you speaking in heated tones with Trowa?"

"Sometimes, adults do ignorant things. When adults get angry or frustrated, they tend to release those feelings on people that they care the most about. . .which was why I was mean toward you earlier."

"Why do adults take things out on people they care for?"

"Because deep down, they know that when everything is said and done, the person will still care for them; no matter what they say. . .and in the end, the people you care for will forgive you no matter how big of an idiot you act." She tossed the pillow onto her bed crawled into his lap and rested her cheek against his shoulder.

"So Trowa is going to forgive you?"

"He already has."

"Then I will too."

"To make amends. . .after you get home from school, I'll play any game you want." She pulled away, a huge smile pulling at her lips.

"Any game?" Heero nodded. "Yay! We can play Candyland." Suddenly, the Japanese man wondered if that was such a good ideal. "Heero?"

". . .hn?. . ."

"How do you make 'amends'?"

"To make amends, you just have to do something to make up for damages that you cause."

"What did you break?"

"You're feelings."

"Oh. So how are you going to make amends to Trowa? Are you going to play a game with him too?"

"I guess you can say that."

"Can I play?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because it's only a two player game."

"Can I have winner then?"

"Heero, you're going to be late." Trowa reminded from the hall. "Duo's in the car changing your radio stations." Mia laughed at the statement. Even she knew how picky Heero was when it came to his music.

"Are you okay with me going?" He asked quickly as he slid Mia from his lap.

"Not really. . ."

"Then how about I call you on my lunch break?" The little girl seem to think this over before nodding. "Then I'll call." With that, they swiftly embraced, and Heero left.

"Trowa?"

". . .hn?. . ."

"What two player game do you and Heero play when he wants to make amends with you?"

"Chess."

____________________________________________

In regards to a statement made earlier about Trowa explaining why she couldn't go to the circus. . .while writing this, I got the impression that Trowa didn't really want to explain that to her. He's trying to cover it up and give Mia the happy childhood that he and Heero never had. By telling her the truth, it would be like taking that from her, and he doesn't really want to do that unless he has to. I hope that explains well.
